January 27-31
Hi families,
Thank you so much for taking time to visit our class blog!
At School:
In Literacy: Students wrote a paragraph about their favourite season. We discussed proper formatting and indentation of our paragraphs and how we can add more details in our writing.
In Word Work: We focused on the prefix bio- and students were introduced to metaphors. We didn't have our vocabulary quiz this week because of our Friday PD Day. Instead, we will have it next Friday!
In Math: Students learned and practiced 3 new strategies for multiplying 3-digit by 1-digit numbers. They learned how to solve problems using distributive property, area model and the standard algorithm. Ask your child to teach you the strategies we learned!
Every Friday, students are given some time to catch up on unfinished activities throughout the week in their finish up folder. Starting next week students will be expected to take home any unfinished work for homework and will be asked to return the completed work on Monday. If there are any, I will post what assignments to look out for that could possibly be coming home to be completed. I truly appreciate your understanding and support in helping your child complete work that they were not able to quite finish up in school. Of course, never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
Family Literacy Week
Families across Calgary are invited to join the Calgary Board of Education in celebrating Family Literacy Week from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, with a focus on environmental learning through the theme “Learn to Be Green, Together.”
The CBE Literacy & Early Learning Team has prepared a variety of information and activities to help families engage in meaningful learning at home and at school. Reading together or doing learning activities at home is crucial to a child’s learning and development. Students should be supervised when accessing online content in the Family Literacy document. Third-party advertisements contained within the links are not endorsed by CBE.
Painting at MTS
We are getting painted!
CBE Maintenance Services have started the preparation for painting the interior of our school. The hallways, library, gym, washrooms, staff room, office area, and interior and exterior doors will be given a fresh new look. Individual classrooms will not be painted. It is anticipated that the project will take twelve to sixteen weeks to complete. The painting will begin in February and extend into March.
Proper maintenance of our school is necessary to provide a healthy and pleasant learning atmosphere that we have all enjoyed over the years at MTS. The majority of paint currently used in CBE schools is latex. Paints containing lead or mercury are never used in schools. Material Safety Data Sheets about the paints are available from the school upon request.
The preparation and painting will take place in the school after school hours and during spring break. Instructional areas will not be occupied by students during painting and drying times. Ventilation systems are operated to prevent painting odours from being circulated in occupied areas. Additional fans are used to exhaust odours out of the building. Special low-odour paints are used throughout. In short, every effort is made to keep paint odours to a minimum.
The health and safety of all students is a primary consideration as the paint crews undertake this project. If you have any concerns or questions about this planned painting project, please feel free to contact the school at 403-777-6185. With the cooperation of parents, students, and CBE staff, this project will result in a bright, new look for MTS. We hope you will stop by when the project is completed to see the results yourself.
Please be informed that Dr. Slater will be away from the school for a short absence from February 3 – 12.
We are pleased to welcome Mr. Mike Hebenton to the school as Acting Principal during this time. Mr. Hebenton is a recently retired elementary school principal who has many years of experience within CBE schools. Mr. Hebenton will work closely with our AP, Mrs. Woodrow to ensure continuity and operational expectations are met at the school.
Please contact Mr. Hebenton at mdhebenton@cbe.ab.ca or Mrs. Woodrow at kjwoodrow@cbe.ab.ca should you have questions or concerns.

Wear Red for Kindness
February is Kindness month.
On Wednesday, February 12, students are invited to wear RED for Valentine’s Day, to celebrate the messages of kindness, caring and friendship that are associated with the special day.
There is no school on February 13 & 14 due to the city-wide Teachers Convention which all staff will be attending. Therefore, on February 12, students may choose to bring valentines to school for their class.
We ask that if students bring valentines, that they ensure that they have a valentine for everyone in their class. Students can sign their own name on the card for their classmate. The school will not be distributing class lists with names to students. Please do not send any treats to school for the class as the school is not able to distribute to students due to food allergies and other medical considerations.
