Week 16 - Jan 6 - Jan 10
I would love to start by introducing myself. I’m Carolyn Wickenheiser and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to be your child’s teacher for the rest of the school year. Our time together is off to a great start! We had a wonderful first week together as we settled back into consistency, routine and expectations here at MTS. As I am sure you may have heard, Mrs. Siarkiewicz’ beautiful baby boy, Arias, was born on December 29th, 2024. He is absolutely adorable and we are extremely happy for her as she welcomes her new bundle of joy!
At School:
In Literacy: After reading Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, we discussed our “Big Words” for 2025.
Students were asked to write about one word that was important to them this year and then they createdagamographs.

In Word Work: This week we focused on the prefix multi-. Ask your child what “multi” means. Students also learned about compound and complex sentences. A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses. For example, “I like apples, but my sister prefers oranges.” A complex sentence has one independent clause (a complete thought) and at least one dependent clause (an incomplete thought). For example, “Because it was raining, we stayed home.”
In Math: We started our Time unit. We reviewed how to tell time from grade 3 and then we learned how to relate
time to fractions. Students learned that they can divide a circle in halves and fourths (quarters) to represent
clock positions. We focused on how “quarter past”, “half past”, and “quarter to” relate to fractions of a
circle on a clock.
In Science: We continued our unit on Waste Management. We discussed the Three R’s (reducing, reusing
and recycling), as well as other ways we can reduce our waste (composting, repurposing and repairing).
Ask your child if they remember the reasons why there is so much waste.
