February 3-7
Hi families,
We had Mr. Mike Hebenton, our acting principal, read a story to our class on World Read Aloud Day (Wednesday). The students were so respectful and welcoming that he wanted to come back in and read Jumanji to them on Thursday!
At School:
In Math: This week we shifted from multiplying 3-digit by 1-digit numbers to dividing them! Students were taught the Area Model Strategy. It was a challenge for some students as there are quite a few steps to remember. Here are the steps and an example in case you would like to work on this strategy at home. Next week, we will start long division.
In Literacy: We talked about our topic sentences in our paragraphs and how we could enhance them in our writing. We discussed 4 different kinds of topic sentences and students chose their own topic and practiced writing their own!

In Word Work: Students learned about metaphors and homonyms. Next week is a short week, so we will be taking a break from vocabulary and students will not have any weekly spelling words.
In Social Studies: We researched and learned about the First Nations of Alberta and what life was like for them living in the different natural regions of our province.
On Monday, students will be coming home with their materials from our Science unit on Waste Management. Their unit test will be on Tuesday, February 18th when they return from their extra long weekend, so they will have lots of time to review.
Recorders have been coming home in backpacks this week. Students are invited to drop in with Mrs. Darr for extra practice on Wednesday at lunch. We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 12th and students are invited to bring cards for their classmates if they'd like. If your child is choosing to bring cards, please make sure they bring one for everyone. There are 30 students in our class! Please no treats or candy. We are encouraging students to wear Red that day as well!
We are going to the Hitmen Be Brave Game on Wednesday, February 26th. Please have your child return the forms that were sent home today as soon as possible. Thank you to our Room Parent for organizing volunteers for us!

Wear Red for Kindness
February is Kindness month.
On Wednesday, February 12, students are invited to wear RED for Valentine’s Day, to celebrate the messages of kindness, caring and friendship that are associated with the special day.
There is no school on February 13 & 14 due to the city-wide Teachers Convention which all staff will be attending. Therefore, on February 12, students may choose to bring valentines to school for their class.
We ask that if students bring valentines, that they ensure that they have a valentine for everyone in their class. Students can sign their own name on the card for their classmate. The school will not be distributing class lists with names to students. Please do not send any treats to school for the class as the school is not able to distribute to students due to food allergies and other medical considerations.
