April 14-17
At School:
In Social Studies: This week, we welcomed Hal Eagletail to our school. We were deeply grateful for the knowledge and cultural oral teachings he shared with us. On Thursday, he led a smudge ceremony for all students and staff, where we received a blessing our school grounds and experienced a traditional song.
In Literacy: Students learned how to organize their narratives into paragraphs and continued working on their stories about Pip. We read Chapter 6 in Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing, focusing on summarizing the main events. Students also completed comprehension questions and word work activities.
In Math: We continued our work with decimal place value, focusing on reading, writing, and comparing decimal numbers.
In Science: We finished our solar system scratch art projects and began researching different constellations!
Since April is Autism Awareness Month, we read a story and had a class discussion about autism to help build understanding and empathy. Students are invited to take part in a colouring contest to support awareness efforts. They began working on their entries today and can continue to work on them during any free time next week. Next Friday, they will be sent home for students who wish to finish. Contest entry details can be found at the bottom of the sheet if your child would like to participate.
Looking Forward:
We are collecting empty large Pringle cans for an upcoming Science project. If you have any, please send them to school with your child. Thank you for your help!

Special Days at MTS
Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. In recognition of this month and in an effort to promote understanding about this community and our specialized EES setting, McKenzie Towne school teachers will do some learning and activities over the course of April to deepen their understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder. In order to celebrate the culmination of this learning, we are inviting staff and students to wear blue on April 30th. The color blue, associated with peace, calmness and acceptance, is the primary color designated for autism which is the reason for wearing blue.
Mental Health Week
May 5th to 11th is Mental Health Week. McKenzie Towne School, led by our excellent Resource Teacher Ms. Blake, will participate in an Alberta wide series of activities and challenges designed to Move Your Mood. In addition, we are inviting all students and staff to wear hats on Wednesday May 7th in order to raise awareness and promote the importance of mental health.
