April 7-11
At School:
Math: We wrapped up our unit on area and began exploring the place value of decimal numbers.
Literacy: We continued working on our stories about Pip. Students learned how to add dialogue using quotation marks and included transition words to improve the flow of their narratives. We have also been reading non-fiction texts during small group reading time. Students read chapter 5 in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing with a partner and worked on sequencing events.
Word Work: We focused on contractions and words with suffix -ible and -able.
Science/Art: Students have been working hard on creating a scratch art solar system project using oil pastels, paint and dish soap. As well as, researching planets.
We played board games with our Kindergarten buddies!
Looking Forward:
There will be no spelling words next week since it's a short week and there is no school on Friday, April 18.
Next week, all PE classes will be held outside as our gymnasium is getting a fresh coat of paint. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather, including proper footwear for outdoor activity. We'll continue with fun, active lessons—rain or shine! Thank you for your support and flexibility.

Messages from School:
Bell Changes and Transportation Services
For the 2025-26 school year, the CBE will be expanding yellow bus service and adjusting walk zones. This is in response to School Transportation Amendment Regulation for student transportation that comes into effect on Sept. 1, 2025. It is the provincial government's intent to increase the number of students who can access transportation by changing the transportation eligibility distance and how the distance is measured.
This means many more students will become eligible to take the bus. Registration for transportation will be available in May.
When changes are made to yellow bus transportation, it has an impact on bell times for schools. That’s because bell times are directly connected to transportation. Aligning bell times across schools makes transportation more efficient, allowing each bus to run multiple routes. This creates a reliable transportation system, ensuring students get to school safely, on time and ready to learn.
Here are the bell times for MTS starting on September 2, 2025.
Monday to Thursday - 8:00am - 2:30pm
Fridays 8:00am-12:00pm
There will be changes for our afternoon kindergarten program as well. More information will be available as soon as it has been finalized.
Special Days at MTS
Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. In recognition of this month and in an effort to promote understanding about this community and our specialized EES setting, McKenzie Towne school teachers will do some learning and activities over the course of April to deepen their understanding of Austism Spectrum Disorder. In order to celebrate the culmination of this learning, we are inviting staff and students to wear blue on April 30th. The color blue, associated with peace, calmness and acceptance, is the primary color designated for autism which is the reason for wearing blue.
Mental Health Week
May 5th to 11th is Mental Health Week. McKenzie Towne School, led by our excellent Resource Teacher Ms. Blake, will participate in an Alberta wide series of activities and challenges designed to Move Your Mood. In addition, we are inviting all students and staff to wear hats on Wednesday May 7th in order to raise awareness and promote the importance of mental health.
McKenzie Highlands Tour and Open House
On Thursday May 1, grade 3 students who are designated to attend McKenzie Highlands in the fall and all grade 4 students will have a tour of the school in the morning.
