 At School:

In Literacy: We started story writing! Students are watching silent video clips featuring a dog named Pip and using them as inspiration to create their own narratives. We've been focusing on the technique of showing, not telling - a strategy that helps paint a vivid picture in the reader's mind and brings stories to life. After watching the first clip, students got started by writing the beginnings of their stories. 

In Math: We learned how to calculate the area of rectangles using a formula. We also solved a variety of word problems involving area, and practiced estimating the area of given rectangles and more complex shapes. 

In Social Studies: We explored the history of the Canadian fur trade

In Art: We created galaxies using chalk pastels.

Word work words for next week are: loveable, likeable, notable, dependable, moveable, readable, adaptable, sensible, flexible, visible, edible, terrible, impossible, incredible, proceed, speed, cheese, sleeve, breeze, degree 

If your child hasn't already, please have them return their Finish-Up Folder.

Next Friday, we'll be playing board games with our Kindergarten buddies! Students are welcome to bring a board game from home that they can teach and play with their buddy.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students.

I would love to start by introducing myself. I’m Carolyn Wickenheiser and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to be your child’s teacher for the rest of the school year. Hi families,  We had Mr. Mike Hebenton, our acting principal, read a story to our class on World Read Aloud Day (Wednesday). The students were so respectful and welcoming that he wanted to come back in and read Jumanji to them on Thursday! At School: In Math:  This week we shifted from multiplying 3-digit by 1-digit numbers to dividing them! Students were taught the Area Model Strategy. It was a challenge for some students as there are quite a few steps to remember. Here are the steps and an example in case you would like to work on this strategy at home. At School: In Literacy:  We wrote a paragraph about our favorite thing! Students were encouraged to use an If..Then, Even..though, Since or When topic sentence, 3 details to support their topic sentence, and a strong concluding sentence like we discussed.  In Math: Students were given a mid-point assessment on multiplication and division. They were given this assessment back on Wednesday to take home. There is still time to practice before our unit test in March. A huge thank you to families who are working on basic multiplication facts at home! While students have multiplication charts as tools in their desks from the fall, the expectation is to know multiplication facts automatically without using the multiplication chart. Please continue to work with your child on multiplication basic facts whenever possible and we will continue to work on them in school as well.
