At School:

Students had a great first week of swimming lessons! We will be heading to the pool again Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. 

We had the Mckenzie Highlands Band perform for us today! They played some familiar songs from Minecraft, Star Wars, and How to Train Your Dragon. We had a wonderful time listening to them!

Twin Day was on Thursday!


In Math: We began our Fractions and Percentages unit by exploring equivalent fractions and learning how to simplify them by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. We continue to work on our basic multiplication facts daily. 

In Literacy: We read examples of concrete poems and created our own!

In Social Studies: We explored the role of missionaries and the development of Francophone communities in Alberta.

In Science: We compared and contrasted the Lunar Calendar with the International Standard Calendar and spent time reviewing for our upcoming unit assessment on space.


Looking Forward:

We will be having our unit assessment on Space on Monday! Students brought their materials home to review earlier this week.

Grade 1 Celebration of Learning

The grade 1 classes will be hosting their celebration of learning at the end of the month for parents.

On May 26 at 10:00am, Ms. Watson, Mrs. Janisse and Ms. Massey will be sharing.

On May 27 at 10:00am, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Burch and Mrs. Larmer will be sharing.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students.

Grade 3 and The Calgary Bridge Foundation

On Thursday June 12, the Grade Three students at our school will be hosting a fundraiser in support of the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth, which supports newly arrived immigrants and refugees.

They will be selling various student-handmade items for $2. There will also be lemonade and cookies available for purchase.

If you would like your child to participate, please send money with them and we will help them select their items to purchase.

I would love to start by introducing myself. I’m Carolyn Wickenheiser and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to be your child’s teacher for the rest of the school year. Hi families,  We had Mr. Mike Hebenton, our acting principal, read a story to our class on World Read Aloud Day (Wednesday). The students were so respectful and welcoming that he wanted to come back in and read Jumanji to them on Thursday! At School: In Math:  This week we shifted from multiplying 3-digit by 1-digit numbers to dividing them! Students were taught the Area Model Strategy. It was a challenge for some students as there are quite a few steps to remember. Here are the steps and an example in case you would like to work on this strategy at home. At School: In Literacy:  We wrote a paragraph about our favorite thing! Students were encouraged to use an If..Then, Even..though, Since or When topic sentence, 3 details to support their topic sentence, and a strong concluding sentence like we discussed.  In Math: Students were given a mid-point assessment on multiplication and division. They were given this assessment back on Wednesday to take home. There is still time to practice before our unit test in March. A huge thank you to families who are working on basic multiplication facts at home! While students have multiplication charts as tools in their desks from the fall, the expectation is to know multiplication facts automatically without using the multiplication chart. Please continue to work with your child on multiplication basic facts whenever possible and we will continue to work on them in school as well.
