May 5-9

 At School:

This week, we celebrated Mental Health Week by exploring different ways to care for our mental well-being. Students participated in a variety of activities designed to support and promote mental health. Some of the highlights include: an outdoor walk with our Grade 2 buddy class, a school-wide dance party, a directed drawing activity focused on healthy foods, mindful breathing and coloring sessions, listening to a story read by our special mystery reader - Ms. Denita, and reflecting on the ways we care for ourselves. We also took part in Hats on for Mental Health Day on Wednesday to show our support!

In Math: We began learning how to add and subtract decimal numbers using visual models and the standard algorithm. We also explored how to use estimation to check whether a sum or difference is reasonable. We continue to practice our basic multiplication facts daily to strengthen our fluency and confidence!

In Literacy: We began exploring poetry. Students learned that poetry is a creative form of writing that that focuses feelings, sounds, and thoughts. When we write poems, our goal is to paint pictures in our readers' minds. Our focus this week was on bio poems and cinquain poems. We read various mentor texts and created our own poems too!

In Social Studies: We learned about the Métis people and their important role during the fur trade.

In Art: Students put the finishing touches on their Earth Day art projects, which we started a few weeks ago.

*While visiting our Kindergarten buddies, we got to hold a baby goose, a duck, and fluffy little chicks!

Looking Forward:

We are collecting empty large Pringle cans for an upcoming Science project. If you have any, please send them to school with your child. Thank you for your help!
