September 2-5

Hi families,

Thank you so much for checking out our weekly blog. Here is where you will find important updates, upcoming events, and what learning activities happened throughout our week together.

We had a fantastic first week together as we all settled back into our routines. Everyone is beginning to adapt to the new expectations and pace of third grade. I feel very blessed to be your child's teacher!

At School:

We spent a lot of time getting to know each other this week and students participated in some team building activities. Students really liked our "Saving Fred activity" -ask your child to tell you all about it!

Students also learned a few new math games, Tetris and King Solitaire, and reviewed 2-digit addition with regrouping.

On Thursday, we went outside to our "sit spot" to observe the land and nature around us. Students had the chance to draw a picture of their surroundings using their senses.

Please check your child's backpack for a red exercise book. Inside, you'll find a note as well as a letter your child wrote to you about their first week in third grade!

Unfinished Work:

In our classroom, students are given enough time throughout the day to complete their tasks. Each student has a “Finish Up” folder in their desk where they can store any unfinished work to complete later. For instance, if a student finishes their math assignment early, they can use the extra time to work on tasks from their "Finish Up" folder.

Every Friday, students are given an additional 30 minutes to catch up on any unfinished work throughout the week. If assignments aren't finished by Friday, they will be sent home over the weekend to complete and are expected to be returned by Monday.

Grade three follows a structured pace to help students succeed throughout the year and be fully prepared for grade 4. While we are dedicated to supporting every student, staying on track with this pace is key to their success. Thank you for your understanding and support!

Looking Forward:

Messages from School:

MTS Open House

On Thursday September 11 from 4:30pm-6:30pm, McKenzie Towne School will be hosting an Open House for students and their families.

If you are interested in attending this informal event, please feel free to pop into the school with your student to meet their teacher and tour the school.

Terry Fox Run

MTS Terry Fox run will take place on Friday, September 12 at 9:00 am.

Starting tomorrow, we encourage students to bring in a toonie for Terry. Our fundraising goal is $1150, which is approximately a toonie for every student and staff member in the school.

If we reach our goal, Mr. V. might wear a tutu for a day!

Mr. V is in need of 5-8 volunteers for each grade to make it a successful event.  Volunteers will be asked to help mark students' hands (so they can track their laps), and help with clean-up afterwards. Volunteers will be needed from 8:45am – 10:00am.

If you are interested in helping for the morning and have a current Police Clearance with the CBE, please contact mckenzietowne@cbe.ab.ca

Orange Shirt Day

During the week of September 22-26, students will spend time reflecting on the meaning of Orange Shirt Day.

On Friday September 26, staff and students are encouraged to wear thier Orange Shirts.

Classroom activities throughout the week will include age-appropriate activities related to Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural significance.

Tuesday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All CBE schools will be closed.

Bus Students

Just a reminder to notify the office, not the teacher, if your child is not riding the bus home.

We take attendance at the end of the day and will hold a bus if we can't find a student.

If you have decided to cancel your transporation this year, please make sure to log into your account and hit the cancel button before fees are added in October.

Don't Forget to Label

To ensure your student doesn't loose any items, please make sure to label all outdoor clothing, lunch bags and water bottles.

Found items with no names, will be in the lost and found box at the front entrance.

Fun Lunch

Fun Lunch will start on Wednesday September 24. You will have until September 19th to register for the first lunch.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students.

  • Go to healthyhunger.ca
  • Log into you existing account or create a new one.
  • Add your child’s information in the “add child” box – name, province, city, school, grade and class.
  • All Fun Lunches will then populate – select the order now button!

Please make sure to send a morning snack with your child on Fun Lunch Days.

Nut Aware School

We are a “nut" aware school. We have students with severe allergies that are life threatening. Please avoid sending nut products to school.
